Fiber Optics Skill Development Laboratory
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna
Akademika established a dedicated Fiber Optics Skill Laboratory at IIT Patna totrain students in modern optical communication, including fibercharacteristics, transmission performance, splicing, testing, and fielddeployment methods. The lab enables hands-on experiments on live optical linksto build strong understanding of high-speed broadband infrastructure.
What Students Learn (Hands-On Outcomes)
1) Attenuation, Numerical Aperture & optical power measurements
2) Multimode vs Single-mode performance bandwidth, dispersion & pulse propagation
3) Laser/LED transmitters & PIN/APD receivers signal quality & noise
4) CWDM wavelength multiplexing and add/drop channel operations
5) Fiber cable laying methods — aerial, underground duct & blowing process
6) Fusion splicing, connectorization & insertion-loss testing
7) OTDR & Visual Fault Locator usage for fault finding & continuity checks
Lab Infrastructure Installed at IIT Patna
1) Dual-wavelength Laser Source & Detector training modules
2) SM fiber modules (100m / 500m / 1km) for testing different distances
3) CWDM Bench-Top Integrated Analyzer & software GUI control
4) OTDR with event trace analysis + optical power meter + inspection microscope
5) Complete splicing & connectorization tool kits
6) Safety gear & fiber handling protection systems
7 ) Industry Skill Readiness
The lab trains students for roles in:
1) Fiber Splicing & Testing Technician
2) Fiber Installation Field Engineer
3) Telecom Maintenance Technician
4) Fiber Project Execution & Quality Assurance
5) This directly supports India’s growing fiber broadband & 5G rollout workforce.
Empowering IIT Patna With Real-World Fiber Expertise
The facility gives students practical exposure to the same tools and techniques used by telecom operators and network integrators — transforming them into deployment-ready fiber professionals.
